Does the holiday season bring out your creativity?

Maybe not all of you would agree, but I believe that the holiday season boosts most people’s creative energy. It’s my favorite time of the year for feeling productive and inspired!

The price of holiday decor adds up quickly! Making your house holiday-gorgeous doesn’t have to break the bank. All it takes to bling your place are a little creativity and clever bargain shopping.

Dollar store was inspiring!

Dollar stores offer an assortment of holiday-themed glasses and plain glassware—fill these with shiny jingle bells or mini tree ornaments. Take pine cones or evergreen clippings from the yard, add shimmery spray paint, and embellish your table centerpiece or garland. Magnolia or pine branches dress up a plain vase or pitcher. Make your own pillow covers from red buffalo plaid to give your throw pillows a facelift. If you have leftover fabric, make matching placemats!

Tips for budget holiday decorating:

  • Shop dollar stores, discount stores, or overstock outlets for holiday decor (or items you can embellish to make your own holiday decor)
  • Look for special holiday sales, especially around Thanksgiving
  • Buy holiday items in bulk at the end of the season—plain silver and gold ornaments make interesting additions to plain centerpieces, and wide wire ribbon makes an inexpensive embellishment
  • Use glitter and shimmery spray paint liberally!
  • Re-purpose items around the house. Some gold spray-painted tree clippings can transform a plain glass vase into a glamorous table centerpiece!
  • Look through holiday editions of decorating magazines to find fresh ideas–you don’t have to re-invent the wheel! Use other people’s ideas but put your own unique twist on them.
  • Holiday decor is often over-the-top. Let your imagination run wild, and don’t be too timid to take some decorating risks during the holiday season!
Happy holidays!

Have fun, and happy holidays to everyone!
