The Most Versatile Home Staging Items for Any Decor Style

Fact: Few people want to spend money on a home that they are preparing to sell.

As a professional home stager who has also been the reluctant home seller, I understand the resistance some buyers have to purchasing new items for the home they are selling. Most of the time, the home seller is more interested in spending money on items for their next home than the one they are leaving.

Home Staging helps to sell homes
Versatile home staging items update homes for listings

However, it is a fact that if a home has decor that is not consistent with the current style, it will not appear as appealing as the competition in online listings. If the competition is new construction or model homes that are staged, having tired decor ages a home considerably.

The result? A home that appears outdated may be listed for much longer, costing extra money and causing stress for the seller. A dreaded price reduction due to lack of interest could ultimately cost the home seller thousands of dollars in revenue.

But wait…I have (mostly inexpensive) staging solutions!

For the home seller who is reluctant to invest in redecorating their soon-to-be-former home, I compiled a list of versatile staging items available at amazing price points. The bonus? These items coordinate well with a variety of home decor styles, so the home seller can purchase them, and use them to decorate their next home! It’s a win-win: the home seller’s home decor gets a much-needed update, and the new home will benefit from current, stylish furnishings!

#1: Round decorative mirror

Round mirrors are great for reflecting light in a room! This timeless mirror can be used over a dresser, in a bathroom, over a fireplace, or beside the door for a quick check on the way out. Mirrors in general are a home staging staple item.

#2: Large floor mirror

Full-length mirrors are a must-have in any home–how else will you know how your shoes look with your outfit? Mount on the wall or use as a leaning mirror to reflect light in a living room or bedroom.

#3: Tall faux plant

Plants add a natural element to any room or corner, and faux plants give the illusion without requiring the care. They also occupy space, which makes staged homes look amazing in photos.

#4: Large woven basket

Large wicker baskets add texture and depth to a room’s decor. As a bonus, they can also serve as an emergency hiding place to store items during a last-minute showing–just add a throw blanket over top of the mess! Problem solved!

#5: White comforter set

Fluffy white comforters not only appear clean, they make a bedroom feel like a high-end hotel experience. Top with a throw blanket or coverlet at the foot of the bed for extra luxury.

#6: White fluffy towel set

For all of the same reasons as #5 above. White towels in a bathroom look like a spa, and appear squeaky-clean. Professional staging tip: Keep a dedicated set of bathroom towels under the sink for a quick change-out just before showings for a fresh look at all times.

#7: Wood trays

Wood trays are great for staging and for organizing areas prone to mess. Use to anchor items for a table centerpiece, or on a countertop to add volume to a display. Wood also adds a natural element to a space, which is a good psychological strategy when staging a home.

#8: Large wood cutting boards

Wood cutting boards add a natural element to a kitchen. Use lying flat to anchor other items on an island or countertop, or prop and lean against the backsplash for a hint of culinary inspiration. I love cutting boards because they are inexpensive and versatile.

#9: Glass soap dispenser

Fill glass soap dispensers with hand soap or dish soap. The dispensers add an upscale feeling to kitchens or bathrooms. Fill with white or clear hand soap for a luxury hotel appearance.

#10: Ceramic canister set

I love this ceramic canister set with wood lids! The mixed media adds texture and variety to any kitchen.

#11: Large neutral area rug

Whatever size area rug you select, make sure it is large enough for the front legs of all furniture to be on the rug! Usually, an 8×10 foot rug is great for a living room.

#12: Upholstered storage bench

Use this upholstered storage bench in a foyer, mudroom, bedroom, or living room. Added bonus? More storage that you can use to stash items before a last-minute showing!

#13: Glass vase

Glass vases are extremely versatile–use on a coffee table, dining room table, console, or as floor decor. Fill with faux floral decor or use fresh clippings from your own yard!

#14: Abstract canvas wall art

Abstract neutral art is a fabulous space filler for long hallways, expansive walls, or over the bed. Bonus: with abstract art, you can flip it horizontally or vertically, depending on your needs.

#15: Neutral throw blanket

Soft throw blankets give an at-home feeling to any living room or bedroom. Choose a blanket like this one to add texture and soften a space.
