Which Kitchen Details Are Trending Right Now?

Do you ever spend time looking at kitchen ideas on houzz.com?

Odds are good that you do, if you are considering a remodeling project or if you are an industry professional. If you don’t, YOU SHOULD! It’s such an inspirational site for anyone who loves interiors.

The houzz.com website has a feature where visitors can search for design ideas according to room. The search, which will yield millions of results, can be filtered by all-time popular, style, price, currently trending, and other parameters. It never fails to stimulate my creativity!

During a trend research session last week, I searched for the most popular results for kitchen photos as of January 2023. Based on those results, I compiled a list of design trends to consider if you are remodeling or choosing new surfaces for your kitchen. My assumption is that the most popular photos today will be the basis for trends in the near future.

Top results—Trends for kitchen upgrades 2023

General overview: Design styles

In general, rustic and transitional styles or details dominated the first several pages of search results. Some kitchens featured aspects of both styles.

1. Eye-catching backsplashes

Bold backsplashes are HOT! The following backsplash styles were represented in significant numbers: geometric tiles, interesting and unusual tile layout, high gloss finish, strong accent colors. In summary, backsplashes stand out by creating a bold focal point.

2. Contrast

Contrast photographs well and catches the eye of the reader. That may explain why photos featuring visual contrast are so popular! What impressed me the most? Black or colorful painted trim and kitchen islands, especially in all-white kitchens.

3. Natural wood elements

Natural wood is the new black! Kitchens featured natural wood finishes alone or alongside painted wood surfaces. Ceiling beams, cabinets, islands, and butcher block countertops in natural wood provide a nice break from the all-white kitchen.

4. White kitchen cabinets with bold hardware

White painted wood still predominates as the preferred kitchen cabinet finish. Spice it up with bold hardware: brushed gold, black, nickel in industrial or creative designs. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy DIY fix for a boring kitchen! Find an impressive selection of hardware on myknobs.com

5. Open shelving/Floating shelves

Open shelving & floating shelves give the kitchen owner the chance to show off statement dish ware and decor items. This feature complements the trend toward minimalism.

6. Strong light fixtures

Memorable light fixtures featured prominently in kitchens. Most notable were fixtures with bold and contrasting finishes, geometric designs, and statement pieces over islands or sinks.
